Meet Stan Glazer
Stan Glazer is one of Kansas City's best known businessmen and political activists. He has been a business executive and entrepreneur for over 50 years, and was a Kansas City mayoral candidate in 2003 and 2007.
Stan was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and has lived in the area all of his life. He is a graduate of Kemper Military Academy, and attended Kansas City Junior College and the University of Missouri at Columbia. After completing eight years of military service, including active duty in the Korean War (US Army 1952-1954 and US Army Reserves 1954-1960), Stan began his successful business career while remaining active in several community organizations.
While Stan is probably best known in Kansas City for founding the Stanford and Sons restaurant and comedy club chain, which he later passed to his sons, there is much more to his business success and history. Stan was president of Sav-On Stores, Inc., which was one of the first family discount stores in the midwest, opening several years before Wal-mart or K-mart entered the area. Other businesses he has led include Royal Automotive, Midwest Auto Auction, KC Arena LTD. and Stan Glazer and Associates.
Stan was the catalyst in bringing the National Hockey League to Kansas City in 1971, and also in the building of Kemper Arena.
Stan was a radio talk show host on KMBZ 980 AM from 2003 through 2005. He also hosted NIGHTSHIFT, a late night talk show which was enjoyed by thousands of listeners.
Stan is a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Federation of Theatre & Radio Artists. He is a past member of the Harry S. Truman Library and the National Restaurant Association.
He was chosen for inclusion in The Marquis "Who's Who in the World" for both the 1984-1985 and the 1987-1988 editions.
In 2003, Stan ran for mayor of Kansas City Missouri, against then-incumbent mayor Kay Barnes. Although he was a political newcomer and lost, he garnered over 43% of the vote. Again in 2007, he ran for mayor in a crowded field of twelve, and lost to current mayor Mark Funkhouser.
Stan and his wife, Lori, now live in Johnson County.
